Endoparasitoids of Lepidoptera larvae (koinobionts) or pupae (idiobionts).

Clypeus usually wide and flat separated from face by a groove, its apical margin widely truncate. Mandible long and slender with lower tooth (when present) usually much reduced. Sternaulus of mesopleuron usually short or absent. Postpectal carina incomplete. Fore wing with areolet almost always closed. Hind wing with vein M+Cu almost always straight. Metasomal tergite I basally slender, apically wider, without glymma and with spiracles near apex. Tergite II usually with deep gastroceoeli. Metasoma dorso-ventrally depressed. Ovipositor short, without dorsal subapical notch. Strong sexual dimorphism.

4300 species in 438 genera.
