During the early stages of the wasp larval development the galls are relatively soft and green, often with a reddish-brown flush. The galls ultimately become extremely hard, brown and woody and persist on the host plant for a number of years after the adult wasps have emerged. Numerous exit holes are visible on old woody galls.
