Distribution
|
Worldwide, except for Australasian region. |
Biology
|
Solitary predatory wasps, provisioning nest constructed in ground, with paralyzed
adult Diptera for consumption
by the wasp larvae (Bohart & Menke, 1976). Oxybelus carry the
prey impaled on the sting, a derived prey transport adaptation (Bohart &
Menke, 1976).
A species of
Oxybelus was observed and photographed (below) on the elytron of
a dung-rolling scarab following and riding the dung beetles repeatedly,
presumably using the beetles as a platform to hunt the associated
kleptoparasitic Musca (Steve A. Marshall pers. comm. 2019).
