The majority of
wasp species are tiny. As a fully formed adult wasp many are a
millimeter or two in length. Photographic documentation of these
miniscule insects using a microscope has associated technical
difficulties.
The high
magnification required to observe and photograph small objects
reduces the depth of field (or thickness of the plane of focus),
with the result that a single photograph may capture part of the
insect in sharp focus, but the rest of the insect will be out of
focus.
