Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia,
Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Somalia, South
Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe. |
Biology
|
Carpenter bees bore tunnels into wood to construct a
nest, which they provision with a mixture of pollen and nectar
sculptured into an elongate shape. This acts as a food source for their
developing larvae. A number of partitions (each containing a single
larva) may be constructed within the tunnel, the partitions are made out
of chewed wood. Recorded on
flowers of: Aeschynomene nodulosa, Calpurnia subdecandra, Canavalia
virosa, Cassia abbreviata, Cassia sp., Foeniculum vulgare, Lathyrus sp.,
Markhamia sp., Mentha sp., Sesbania bispinosa, Sesbania sesban, Sophora
inhambanensis, Sophora tomentosa, Tecoma stans. Nests in: Acacia
albida, Agave sp., Erythrina sp., Jacaranda sp., Melia azedarach, Pinus
patula, Pterocarpus sp., Spathodea sp., Syzygium cordatum, Uapaca
kirkiana. Parasite: Coelopencyrtus callainus, Coelopencyrtus
taylori, Coelopencyrtus watmoughi, Dinogamasus villosior, Hyperechia
bifasciata, Hyperechia imitator, Hyperechia marshalli, Paralipsa exacta,
Physocephala bimarginipennis, Synhoria hottentota, Synhoria sp. (Eardley & Urban, 2010). |
