The female moth (genus Scyrotis, family Cecidosidae) has a piercing egg-layer that she extends to insert her eggs into the plant tissue. Laying her eggs causes the plant tissue to grow abnormally forming an oval gall surrounding a central cavity containing the egg and subsequently the caterpillar.
